What flooring companies should actually target
People do not search for "flooring company". They search for a material, a service, a problem or a city — and each of those needs a different page.
- Read time
- 6 min
- Output
- A page map
- Applies to
- Retail & install
- Rule
- One intent per page
The single most common structural mistake in this industry is a homepage that lists every service and a services page that lists them again, competing for everything and ranking for nothing.
Group your keywords by intent first, then build one page per group.
Material terms — the largest group
People search the floor they want, not the business type. Each material deserves a page, and each page should cover installation, cost, pros and cons, and how it holds up.
- Hardwood — installation, refinishing, engineered vs solid
- Luxury vinyl plank and LVT — by far the fastest-growing group
- Laminate
- Tile — porcelain, ceramic, natural stone
- Carpet — broadloom, carpet tile, stair runners
- Bamboo, cork, linoleum
- Polished concrete and epoxy — a different playbook
Service terms
Distinct from materials and often higher intent, because the searcher has already decided what they need done.
- Installation, replacement, repair
- Refinishing, sanding, recoating
- Subfloor repair and levelling
- Water damage and pet damage replacement
- Commercial fit-out
City and neighbourhood terms
One page per city you genuinely serve — not per city you would drive to. Each needs enough local substance to be a different page: which suburbs, what housing stock, which materials are common there, projects you have completed nearby. Fifty spun city pages get the whole set filtered.
Research-phase terms — the group everyone skips
Flooring has an unusually long consideration cycle, and the shortlist forms during it. These queries convert slowly and matter enormously.
- Material comparisons — LVP vs laminate, engineered vs solid hardwood
- Cost per square foot, installed, by material
- Durability with pets, kids, underfloor heating, basements and moisture
- How long installation takes, what prep is needed
- Whether existing flooring has to come up first
See the content plan for how to sequence these.
Brand terms
If you carry Shaw, Mohawk, Karndean or similar, people search those names plus a city. Those pages are also the ones most likely to qualify for co-op funding, which changes the economics of building them.
If two keywords would be answered by the same page, they belong together. If they would need different answers, they need different pages. That rule resolves most architecture arguments faster than a spreadsheet does.
What to build first
- Your top three materials by revenue, not by search volume
- Your primary city
- Your highest-margin service
- Then the next three cities, then the next three materials
Volume is a tiebreaker, not the ranking criterion. A page for the work you actually want is worth more than a page for the work that gets searched most.
